The most common cause of teeth loss is periodontitis, this is the loss of bone and support tissue around the teeth, promoting their mobility and subsequent loss. Among other causes may be tooth decay, trauma, and developmental defects. There are several alternatives for replacing teeth that patients might have lost for any of those reasons.

The use of dental implants to replace the lost teeth is an excellent alternative and the most natural way. Other alternatives such as fixed bridges and dentures have been used to replace missing teeth, however, dental implants have become the most popular solution due to their high success rate, the predictability of the implanting procedure, and the very good aesthetic results.


The treatment plan in dental implants is one of the most important steps before performing the procedure. It will be necessary to evaluate the medical condition of the patient and the quantity and quality of the bone jaw to design and customize a treatment plan. The plan addresses the specific needs of the patient and is prepared by professionals who are specially trained and experienced in oral surgery and restorative dentistry.

A dental implant is a small cylindric or conic screw made of titanium that is surgically submerged into the bone of the upper or lower jaw, replacing the root of the tooth that has been lost. Once the implant is placed, the healing process, which consists in the healing of the bone around the titanium implant, may take about 4 to 12 weeks to heal for the lower jaw and generally longer fort the upper jaw. This can vary depending on the bone quality and health conditions of each individual patient.

Once the healing is completed, a crown, bridge, or denture that has been previously designed will be placed over the implant, giving the patient function and aesthetic. In some specific cases it is possible to place a temporary crown over the implant on the same day of the surgery.
